The limestone formations of the Sierra de Huma massif, situated between the municipalities of Ardales, are highly susceptible to water and wind erosion, lending the landscape a picturesque appearance. From an aesthetic point of view, the most spectacular feature is undoubtedly the sheer verticality of these large rock formations. The Natural Park takes its name from its most spectacular feature: the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. This is a narrow gorge carved out by the River Guadalhorce through Jurassic and Miocene limestones and dolomites.<\/p>\n

The dimensions of this narrow gorge, which is over three kilometres long, are striking. In some sections, the width between its sides is barely more than ten metres, which is all the more impressive given that, at certain points, the height of the summit above the river reaches 700 metres.<\/p>\n

There are also quite a few cavities in the gorge\u2019s walls, some of which are well above the course of the Guadalhorce. Furthermore, it is easy to spot other caves within the nature reserve, such as those that, until a few years ago, were used as dwellings by local residents. These and other features make this one of the most\u2026 <\/span>unique<\/strong> <\/span>in Andalusia.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Mountain goats inhabit the higher areas. Smaller animals such as blackbirds and swifts live in the lower areas, near the water. Other mammals that are harder to spot include dormice and genets. In the middle sections of La Garganta, falcons and kestrels <\/span>the common buzzard and the goshawk, as well as other medium-sized birds of prey. The summit is a nesting site and stronghold for large birds of prey such as the golden <\/span>eagle or the griffon <\/span>vulture<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Aleppo pines, stone pines, holm oaks and eucalyptus trees, accompanied by scrub dominated by junipers, palmito, broom and rockrose. Along the riverbank, the vegetation consists of rushes, reeds, cane, oleanders and tamarisk, as well as some poplars and willows. And the most protected plant, Rupicapnos africana, which features in the Red List of protected species in Andalusia. It grows on vertical rocks and is critically endangered.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
